Cilcare, a French-US biopharmaceutical company, has announced plans for a US clinical trial of an investigational drug candidate for chronic tinnitus. The company described the plans at the SelectUSA Investment Summit in early May 2026, and says this would be the first evaluation of the drug candidate, called CIL001, in tinnitus patients in the United States.
CIL001 targets cochlear synaptopathy, damage to the connections between the inner ear and the auditory nerve. According to the company, this mechanism is involved in tinnitus and in difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments. The drug candidate is designed to be delivered through a single injection into the middle ear and is described as intended to advance into Phase 2a clinical evaluation.
Tinnitus is the perception of sound, often ringing or buzzing, without an external source. According to the company, it affects an estimated 50 million Americans, and there is currently no approved medication to treat it. Existing approaches focus on management rather than a pharmacological cure.
Several caveats apply. CIL001 is investigational and not approved for use. The announcement describes a trial in preparation rather than results, and no efficacy data in tinnitus patients is available yet. Early-stage trials establish safety and provide preliminary evidence; whether the drug proves effective would depend on the outcome of this and later trials.
