FCC to Consider Proposal to Modernize Accessibility Rules at October 29 Open Meeting

During its October 29, 2026 Open Meeting, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will vote on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) about updating its accessibility rules. According to the FCC, the proposal would seek comment on making the rules technology-neutral and forward-looking, which would allegedly give developers flexibility to build accessibility into their products.

The NPRM would also ask for input on marketplace barriers to accessibility, opportunities to improve the accessibility and usability of communications, and specific barriers identified in other FCC proceedings. The version released ahead of the meeting is a draft and may change before the vote.

The meeting starts at 10:30 AM ET in the Commission Meeting Room at 45 L Street NE, Washington, DC, and will be streamed live at fcc.gov/live. Open captioning and sign language interpreting will be provided. To request other accommodations, email fcc504@fcc.gov or call (202) 418-0530.
