The FCC is seeking public comments on proposals that would accelerate the transition to ATSC 3.0, or “Next Gen TV,” which supports more advanced accessibility features than today’s ATSC 1.0 broadcasts. The agency wants feedback on whether existing accessibility rules need updates for ATSC 3.0, whether broadcasters and device makers should be required to offer features like multiple audio tracks, customizable captions, and sign-language integration, and whether cable and satellite providers should have to pass those features through.
They are also asking about the legal authority and cost-benefit considerations behind these requirements. Comments are due January 20, 2026, with reply comments due February 18, 2026.
Per the FCC, "interested parties may file comments by accessing the FCC’s Electronic Comment Filing System at https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings. All filings must reference GN Docket No. 16-142. People with disabilities who need assistance to file comments online may request assistance by email to FCC504@fcc.gov."
