National Endowment for the Arts Funds Deaf-Centered Music Education Research

CymaSpace, a Deaf-led nonprofit arts and cultural organization based in Portland, Oregon, has received a $90,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support a year-long research project called Universal Music Design. The project explores how a Deaf-centered approach to STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) can improve engagement, learning, and creative expression for K-12 students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing.

According to the organization, findings will inform the development of a K-12 STEAM curriculum for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The project includes a companion album produced by Deaf and hard of hearing artists, which will support students as a listening tool and as a source material for the curriculum. CymaSpace works on making music and cultural experiences accessible through approaches such as translating sound into visual and tactile forms.
