Audio-Technica announced the Mimio Assist One earbuds and a matching TV speaker, designed for people who want occasional hearing help. These are Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs), consumer devices that make sounds louder but aren’t regulated as medical hearing aids. They can be used by people without diagnosed hearing loss who just want clearer sound in situations like watching TV, talking in noisy places, or listening outdoors.
The earbuds have different listening modes for conversations, TV, and outdoor environments, plus water resistance. They’re launching first in Japan, with a rental option so people can try them at a low cost. While they work a lot like basic hearing aids, PSAPs don’t require a prescription and aren’t intended to replace professional hearing care.
