Officials in Patna, a major district in the Indian state of Bihar, have set a goal of completing 500 cochlear implant surgeries for children by June under a government-led public health effort. The plan is part of India’s push to address childhood hearing loss through early screening, publicly funded surgery, and follow-up rehabilitation. Under the program, children are screened for hearing loss at birth and again during routine vaccination visits. Those identified with severe to profound hearing loss are referred for evaluation and, when appropriate, cochlear implant surgery at government-supported hospitals. Between July and November 2025, the Patna district screened 66,434 children.
