A 15-year-old girl from Queens, New York who was born with microtia, a condition where the right outer ear and ear canal didn’t form, can now hear clearly for the first time after a series of reconstructive surgeries that included rebuilding her ear and fitting a bone-anchored hearing device.
The procedures were provided with help from the Little Baby Face Foundation and led by a surgical team using rib cartilage for the ear reconstruction and a hearing implant that lets her pick up sounds she couldn’t before. When the implant was activated and connected to a smartphone, she reacted emotionally to hearing clearly, and she said she no longer feels left out socially. The story shows how surgical advances and support from nonprofits can change daily life for people with congenital conditions affecting hearing.
