YouTube Tests Expressive Captions for English Videos

YouTube has rolled out a new caption style called "Expressive Captions" for English language videos, aimed at conveying more context from audio without changing the underlying speech content. The captions reflect tone and intensity through formatting choices such as capitalization and include descriptions of non-speech sounds like laughter, applause, sighs, or background noise.

According to YouTube, the feature was introduced to provide viewers additional cues about how something is said and what is happening audibly in a scene. Expressive Captions apply to newly uploaded English videos starting in mid-October and are available across devices, with broader coverage expected over time.
