FDA OKs AirPods Pro 2 hearing-aid mode

Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 are now FDA-approved as over-the-counter hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. Users can take a hearing test on their iPhone or iPad (iOS 18+) and activate personalized sound settings.

With a software update, users will be able to access hearing aid features without needing a prescription or audiologist visit. This change could make hearing support more accessible, affordable, and discreet, since the technology is built into a widely used consumer device.

However, they’re not meant for severe hearing loss or users under 18. Experts caution they don’t replace full hearing evaluations or professional care, and some features may still fall short compared to traditional hearing aids.

Batteries are non-replaceable and AppleCare+ does not cover amplification failures, so traditional aids may still offer superior service and power longevity.
