Cybersecurity Careers and Opportunities for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Professionals

A recent Help Net Security article examines the role of deaf and hard-of-hearing professionals in the cybersecurity workforce. The piece notes that employment rates for deaf individuals in the United States remain lower than those for hearing individuals, and many workers face barriers to advancement. At the same time, fields such as computer science and cybersecurity show comparatively stronger employment outcomes for deaf graduates.

The article suggests that the text-based and screen-focused nature of cybersecurity work, along with remote collaboration tools, may reduce some communication barriers found in other professions. It points to training initiatives and academic programs, including those at Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf, that aim to support pathways into cybersecurity careers for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
