MED-EL Launches TICI UNICO, a Fully Invisible Cochlear Implant

MED-EL, an Austrian-based hearing implant manufacturer, announced TICI UNICO, which the company describes as the first and only commercially available invisible cochlear implant. The device, announced September 29, is designed for people with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss and is supposed to provide continuous hearing while remaining entirely beneath the skin, with no externally worn processor.

According to the company, TICI UNICO uses a microphone technology developed to capture sound while fully implanted, and is designed to deliver hearing performance comparable to established cochlear implant systems. Conventional cochlear implants pair a surgically placed internal device with an external sound processor worn behind the ear. A fully implanted design removes the external components, which the company frames as offering continuous use, including during activities such as sleeping, showering, and swimming.

This is a company announcement, and performance claims come from the manufacturer rather than independent evaluation. TICI UNICO is intended for people with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss who may benefit from a cochlear implant.
