ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Deadline Approaching, With Regulatory Uncertainty

A U.S. Department of Justice deadline under Title II of the ADA takes effect April 24, 2026. State and local government entities serving populations of 50,000 or more must bring websites, mobile applications, and online portals into compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Smaller entities and special purpose districts have until April 2027. In February 2026, the Trump administration's DOJ submitted a revised version of the rule as an Interim Final Rule, which does not require public comment before taking effect.

The specific revisions have not been published. As of March 21, 2026, the April 24 deadline remains legally in effect. Private litigation under the ADA continues regardless of federal enforcement posture; more than 8,600 ADA-related lawsuits were filed in 2025.
