Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants Improve Social Life and Reduce Loneliness, USC Study Finds

A new University of Southern California study shows that using hearing aids and cochlear implants can help adults with hearing loss engage more in social life and feel less isolated. The research team reviewed 65 earlier studies with more than 5,000 participants and found consistent benefits when people used these devices, including stronger connections with others and easier participation in conversations.

Those with cochlear implants saw the largest gains, likely because implants restore more hearing for severe loss. The study also notes that treating hearing loss may improve overall quality of life and could be tied to longer life, building on earlier findings that hearing aid use is linked to lower mortality. Researchers highlight stigma around hearing loss and device use as a barrier for some, and point out that modern devices are smaller and more discreet than older models.
