Better Hearing with Cochlear Implants Linked to More Music Listening

A recent study found that adult cochlear implant users who have stronger hearing outcomes also report spending more time listening to music. The research, published in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, looked at 72 adults with various implant setups, including bilateral implants, bimodal devices, and single implants. It showed a clear connection between better hearing ability as measured by standard speech tests and greater self-reported music listening time.

Each 10-decibel improvement in hearing corresponded with a rise in reported music listening on a 10-point scale. Participants had an average of 7.5 years of implant experience and rated both their enjoyment of music and time spent listening around the mid-range of the scale. The results suggest that fine-tuning cochlear implant settings for speech outcomes could also help users enjoy music more, improving overall quality of life.
