A research team is recruiting adults age 50 and older who have hearing loss and use voice calls with captions to take part in a study on captioned telephone services. The research is funded by the Federal Communications Commission and conducted by MITRE, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Gallaudet University.
Participants will complete four brief captioned phone conversations with a research assistant and respond to survey questions about their experiences. Sessions are conducted online using a personal laptop or desktop computer and are expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes. Compensation is available for completing the study.
To be eligible, participants must be 50 or older, have hearing loss, make phone calls using their voice, and sometimes use captions during calls. Hearing aid and cochlear implant users are welcome to apply. Real-time captioning will be provided. ASL interpretation will not be available for this study. Enrollment is open through March 2027.
