WHO and ITU Launch Global Standard to Protect Gamers from Hearing Loss

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have released the first global standard aimed at preventing hearing loss among gamers, especially for children and young adults. The standard targets both gaming hardware and software, encouraging features like volume limiters, safe listening alerts, and headphone safety modes to reduce long-term exposure to harmful sound levels.

This initiative is under WHO’s broader “Make Listening Safe” campaign and promotes safer audio design in video games and esports. It asks industry, developers, manufacturers, and policymakers to integrate these safety features to address mounting concerns over noise-induced hearing damage in the gaming community.
